Do we have a twin in this world? Whether we can be in two places at the same time? In history, there are many records of people who claim to encounter herself. This phenomenon is often referred to as Doppelganger.
Doppelganger comes from the German word that means "Double Walker". This term is used to refer to the shadow self that accompanies every human being to believe in this earth.
This phenomenon is different from the ghost sightings. If the ghost sightings means a person sees the image of someone who has died, then the doppelganger phenomenon is to see the shadow of someone who is still alive.
In many cases, the Doppelganger is believed to be signs of death. It is said that Queen Elizabeth I met at herself before she died.
Whether this phenomenon when it first appeared. But in 1691, found a note of the Doppelganger, written by Robert Kirk, who writes that this phenomenon has emerged in the stories of the people of Scotland and Ireland.
Case Dr.Wynn Wescott
On April 12, 1888, at the British Museum of London, a doppelganger report created a stir among museum staff. Dr. Wynn Wescott and Rev. WT Lemon is scheduled to meet in the museum reading room.
Reverend Lemon arrived a few minutes early and saw Dr. Wescott was in talks with a colleague named Mrs. Salmon.
Not long after, Mrs. Salmon politely say hello to Dr.Wescott and leave the conversation.
He walked past the preacher Lemon and greet. Then, turning to Mrs. Salmon Dr.Wescott to tell that the Reverend Lemon has arrived. But he was surprised to realize that Dr.. Wescott who had been standing had been lost.
Reverend and Mrs. Lemon. Salmon then asked the receptionist and other museum officials. They get the same answer. All did see Dr. Wescott entered the room, but no one saw him leave the room.
Shocked and worried, they check to the house of Dr.. Wescott and unexpectedly they found Dr. Wescott was lying in bed, sick and did not leave his bed since the morning.
Case of Abraham Lincoln
Other cases are also renowned Doppelganger is a case experienced by Abraham Lincoln. The story is narrated by Noah Brooks, who claims to hear directly from Lincoln.
Told that when Lincoln was elected president, he met "him" with two faces in her living room. One face is paler than the other. When she approached him, the shadow disappeared.
Then he threw his body onto the sofa to rest and the shadow reappeared. A few days later, her reflection with two faces was re-emerged. But the apparition is the appearance the last time.
When he told his wife, his wife said that the two faces that means Lincoln will be elected as president for two terms, while the second, more pale face showed that he would not live past his second term.
Out of nowhere she knows it, but the predictions prove correct because Lincoln was killed in 1865 during his second term holding.
Case Emilie Sagee
From among all the cases of the famous doppelganger, perhaps this case is the most puzzling cases. The story is told by Robert Dale Owen who heard it from Julie Von Guldenstubbe, the second Baron Von Guldenstubbe.
In 1845, when Julie was 3 years old, she attended von Neuwlcke school, a girls' school near Latvia. One teacher was a woman named Emilie Sagee 32 years.
Although Ms.Sagee known as a good teacher, rumors circulated in the school that the "twin" Ms.Sagee often seen appearing and disappearing in front of the disciples.
Once told that while Ms.Sagee was writing on the blackboard, identical twin who appeared at his side. Doppelganger's exactly mimic all the movement Ms.Sagee, except he does not hold chalk. This event was witnessed by 13 students in the class.
Even more remarkable was the incident that occurred the next day. At that time, 42 students were gathered in the hall for sewing lessons. Ms.Sagee was in the garden, visible from the window by the disciples.
Suddenly, Doppelganger Ms.Sagee appeared and sat in a chair in front of the room. A brave student who runs ahead and try to touch the creature, but he felt there is an obstacle that does not look his way. Then the Doppelganger is slowly disappearing.
Ms.Sagee himself knows this, but he also did not understand the phenomenon of what is going on. According to him, when doppelgangernya appeared, he could feel the exhaustion. Even his face turned ashen.
Doppelganger and Culture
Doppelganger phenomenon has many explanations vary in different parts of the world. In Denmark, there is a story that mentions a Troll (mythical creature) kidnapped a pregnant woman and then replace it with doppelgangernya to cover up his crime.
In Jewish tradition, every person believed to have an angel that looked like it seems that sometimes arise and manifest themselves.
In the tradition and trust other countries, Doppelganger is simply interpreted as an evil spirit that takes the form of man.
Dr.Peter Brugger Theory
In the context of science, Dr.Peter Brugger from Zurich University Hospital, theorized the existence of Doppelganger Syndrome. This syndrome, according to Dr.Brugger is a sense in which a patient can feel re-amputation of a limb that has been lost.
In the case of Doppelganger, not just some of the limbs is felt, but the whole body of "additional" is felt outside the body and are beyond its control.
According Dr.Brugger, this syndrome can occur when nerves we experience the shock that we will bring the internal representations of self and then transferred to the outside world. This usually happens when we're stressed, lonely or when we suffered brain injuries or tumors.
For Brugger, this neurological phenomenon can explain the existence of "imaginary friend" experienced by many young children.
Experiments by Shahar Arzy
Dr.Brugger addition, other scientific explanations also appeared in September 2006 in the magazine Nature. The magazine released the results of experiments carried out by Shahar Arzy and colleagues at University Hospital, Geneva, Switzerland.
They unexpectedly succeeded in creating a doppelganger phenomena using electromagnetic stimulation given to the patient's brain.
The patient was told to lie quietly on the bed, then, they provide electrical stimulation to the temporoparietal Junction (TPJ) in his left brain.
When the stimulation was given, immediately the patient can feel the presence of other people in that place. Thus, this experiment proves that this phenomenon may be related to disruption of brain activity.
According Arzy, these experiments may explain the hallucinations are often experienced by patients with schizophrenia or paranoia.
Shahar Arzy Dr.Brugger explanation or indeed may explain Lincoln's experience, but can not explain the experience and Ms.Sagee Dr.Wescott.
For example in Ms.Sagee experience, maybe 42 people the student's impaired left temporoparietal brain simultaneously?
still a mystery
